Raouf Gharbo

Dr. Gharbo completed his specialty residency medical training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at an elite program at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to specialty residency training, he learned a holistic translational approach to medicine at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio. Dr. Gharbo is board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and accredited by the Academy of Integrative Pain Management. He is a long standing EVMS Clinical Associate Faculty member of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Gharbo focuses on maximizing mobility and function after neurologic and spine injuries supporting the neurosurgical group at Riverside Hampton Roads Neurosurgical & Spine Specialists. He developed an innovative, balanced and empowering approach to chronic pain that helped to earn him recognition as a Top Presenter at the International Conference on Opioids. Dr. Gharbo has authored an introductory chapter to a neuromuscular electrophysiology text and regularly speaks nationally and internationally. He is a contributing clinical expert for a study currently underway at the Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital in conjunction with the University of South Carolina. The study will be the first randomized control trial design of heart rate variability training for chronic pain management.
Dr. Gharbo has served extensively with Physicians for Peace as part of the Medical Operations Committee and also as a leader of medical missions to support the amputee clinic in Basra, Iraq. After walking on to The Ohio State University wrestling team, he earned All-American status and was awarded the university’s top male scholar-athlete award, the Big Ten Medal of Honor.
